The ARU have started a new rugby initiative for U13-U15 girls wanting to play rugby. This is a club based U15’s competition designed specifically for girls who are wanting to try it out or are currently playing but would prefer to play with girls of a similar age. There will be a 4 week compressed competition that is played at a centralised venue each Saturday starting the 9th September.

In 2017 Ponsonby Rugby Club will offer a GIRLS ONLY rugby module for girls from Under 8 to Under 13. With so many girls playing in our junior touch module and the steady increase in women’s rugby Ponsonby Rugby Club have responded with an exciting and enjoyable opportunity for girls. The ‘Fillies’ are Ponsonby's Premier women’s team and have produced numerous representative honours both at international and provincial level. In 2016 the Fillies boasted four Black Ferns, one NZ Women’s Sevens player and 19 Auckland players! The Fillies have won countless championships and are consistently top 4 finishers.

Games will be played every Monday night from 4.30pm at Western Springs Outer Fields starting 6th March and finishing 10th April 2017.

The grades offered in 2017 are:

U8/9 Rippa Rugby

U10/11 Rippa Rugby

U12/13 No Ruck Rugby

‘Rippa Rugby’ is a non-contact version of Rugby. A ‘tackle’ is made once the Velcro tag has been ripped from the belt or shorts at which point the ball carrier must pass the ball.

‘No Ruck’ Rugby is an abbreviated form of the game that allows girls to concentrate on tackling and carrying the ball into contact. Scrums and Lineouts are uncontested.

We are looking at providing a coaching evening in February before the module starts and short coaching sessions from 4-4.30pm each Monday night. One parent/coach from your team will be allowed on the field to help coach the girls during the game.

Teams can choose to wear their school uniforms, our rugby jerseys or design your own Canterbury Rippa Rugby T shirt! Tag belts and tag will be provided. It is preferred that girls wear running shoes or appropriate footwear.

Mouth-guards are compulsory for both Rippa and Tackle rugby.

Games will be played on half of a rugby field across the pitch. Rippa Rugby will be 6 players a side, No Ruck Rugby will be 8/10 a side depending on numbers.

Will be provided each game and will help the girls throughout the games.

$50 per girl or $250 per team (the manager will collect the players fees and play the club in total)
