Premiers at Western Springs on Saturday 30 April

The Ponsonby Premiers will be back at their Western Springs home this Saturday afternoon, hosting the neighbouring Eden side in the third round of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Championship.

After two rounds of the new season Ponsonby have recorded a win and a loss, whilst Eden are looking for their first victory.

Ponsonby are buoyant after their satisfying 33-0 victory over Te Papapa Onehunga last weekend. Eden, on the other hand refused to lie down for Grammar-Tec in the same round, eventually falling by 32-16, after trailing by 14-6 at halftime.

Ponsonby and Eden squared off in the opening round of the competition in April 2015, the blue and blacks dominated proceedings in the first half and led by 29-3 at the break, but came up against some stern opposition in the second stanza, eventually winning by 44-15.

Ponsonby’s head coach, Peter Leuluso’o made a handful of changes to the starting XV for this match from that which had started against Te Papapa-Onehunga. The pack includes Steven Savali, Phil Viane, Sam Slade and Willis Hopwood, and the backs will include Laki Tiatia and Keenan Masina. Romero Tagi will captain the side for the first time from hooker.

The Premiers kick off at 2.45pm, and the Premier Reserves at 1.00pm – both games being played on the main ground at Western Springs Stadium.

Premiers downed by College Rifles in season opener

The Ponsonby Premiers opened their 2016 season in the Alan McEvoy Memorial Championship last Saturday afternoon going down by 26-13 to College Rifles, in what was a very physical encounter. Ponsonby led by 13-10 at halftime.

Played at Western Springs Stadium, both sides scored two tries, the difference being the boot of College Rifles’ Broc Hooper, who contributed 16 points from the boot.

The blue and blacks sustained injuries to three key backs in the first half, the resulting reshuffle of personnel impacting Ponsonby’s defensive effort.

Ponsonby last played College Rifles in May 2015, in a Gallaher Shield group qualifying match. On that occasion Ponsonby outmuscled their opponents by 49-26, but this year the outcome was very different. In the second half, Ponsonby found the visitors game extremely aggressive, particularly at set piece.

Ponsonby started the match brimming with confidence after their exceptional 64-14 win over University in a pre-season fixture last week, whilst College Rifles were buoyant following their 25-19 success in the Pollard Cup final against Papatoetoe.

In his first start for Ponsonby, Jordan Trainor goaled a penalty from a handy position in just the fifth minute, a lead that Ponsonby maintained for the first quarter of the game.

College Rifles’ kicker, Broc Hooper missed two penalty shots at goal, not striking the ball cleanly.

At the halfway point in the first spell, Ponsonby unleashed a classic backline move, and from 25 metres out key breaks by Pryor Collier and Jordan Trainor resulted in Joe Beckett racing over in the left hand corner. The conversion attempt by Charlie Hubert drifted away.

The Beckett try came at a price, with both Junior Cagiaceva and Trainor leaving the field with injuries, the latter being felled in a rather nasty tackle.

Almost straight away, Rifles responded with a superb try. Some solid running by centre Loketi Manu, with good support from Russell Dobbie, and halfback Harry Hanham crossed the line out wide. First five eighth Broc Hooper landed the conversion to bring the visitors close at 8-7.

With the half drawing to a close, Hooper gave his side the lead in the match, goaling a long range penalty.

From the ensuing restart, College Rifles looked to run the ball back into Ponsonby’s territory, but a stray pass was intercepted by Pryor Collier who showed some blistering pace on a 40 metre dash to the line. The Hubert conversion was unsuccessful, and Ponsonby went to the halftime break at 13-10 ahead.

With injuries taking its toll on Ponsonby, their second half effort became rather disjointed. Broc Hooper goaled two further penalties for the visitors, extending their lead to 16-13, before the y exploited Ponsonby’s defence.  A solid break by midfielder Kaituu Kaufana, with good support from flanker Jeremy Innes and the left winger Loma Iloahefaiva, saw the right winger Sai Vatubua cross in the corner. Hooper converted, stretching the lead for his side to 23-13.

Ponsonby attempted a late rally, to try and salvage what would have been a valuable bonus point, but the efforts were in vain, and a further Broc Hooper penalty saw the visitors lead extend to 26-13.

The result saw the Camradery Cup in its inaugural match heading to Haast St in Remuera for the season.

Ponsonby will now look to next week’s fixture against Te Papapa Onehunga, due to be played at Ferguson Park. Te Papapa-Onehunga were made to work hard for their 15-14 victory last week over Eden.

In the curtainraiser between the two Premier Reserve sides, Ponsonby were too clinical for their opposites winning by 27-10 after leading by 22-3 at halftime.

PREMIERS PRIMED FOR NEW SEASON

The Ponsonby Premiers will open their 2016 season in the Alan McEvoy Memorial Championship on Saturday afternoon, hosting College Rifles.

At stake for the first time is the Comradery Cup, donated by club stalwart and Premier centurion -Sam Lawrence, who sustained a career ending injury when these two sides met in round robin play in 2015.

The season for the blue and blacks commenced on the 16th of March in the Waka Nathan Cup, Ponsonby going down to a belligerent Pakuranga side by 37-17. Pakuranga crossed for seven tries, and had their goal kickers enjoyed a better afternoon, the score could have been considerably higher. Following this loss, Ponsonby played two ‘warm-up’ matches, firstly against Grammar-Tec when they were edged by 18-12. Last week Ponsonby put in an almost flawless display against University, demolishing the students by 64-14, scoring ten tries in the rout, the backs contributing eight of these. University had no answer for the pace at which Ponsonby played the match, and struggled with the sublime skills that Ponsonby presented.

The 2016 Ponsonby Premier side has a very exciting and youthful look, with six players named in the starting XV against College Rifles to make their debut for the club. Five of these players feature in what is a promising backline. Charlie Hubert and Joe Beckett hail from the UK, Campbell Woodmass has made the move from Wellington, Patrick Tausie will line up against his old club, Rifles, and Blues squad member Jordan Trainor will wear the number 15 jersey. The pack sees the former Marist lock, Jamie Lane, making his first official start for the blue and blacks.

The Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield competition sees the same format adopted as last year, with Ponsonby in a pool of eight sides, competing in a seven week competition. At the completion of the seven matches, the top four qualifiers with join with the top four finalists from the opposing pool of eight sides, and these eight teams will compete in the Gallaher Shield qualifying round

The second round of the Alan McEvoy sees Ponsonby travel to Ferguson Park to tackle Te Papapa-Onehunga, then the following week. The amalgamation which saw Maungarua in competition in recent seasons has disbanded, and Te Papapa Onehunga and Mt Wellington have now both returned to premier rugby as their individual clubs.

Following the Te Papapa-Onehunga fixture, Ponsonby will face Eden, Grammar-Tec, Pakuranga, Manukau Rovers and Otahuhu – the Eden and Manukau games being played at home, and the others being away.
