PONSONBY RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL LUNCHEON

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16TH 2016 AT MID DAY.

It follows the very successful Roast format we have held over the last couple of years. The first one being for Bryan Craies and the second for Keith Nelson.

This year we will be Roasting Phil Gifford aka Loose Head Len. Phil and Loose Head have been great stalwarts and club members for over five decades. Many of our players have had their rugby careers highlighted and advanced by Phil and Loose Head and this will be our chance to say thank you.

At this luncheon, as it is an important fundraiser for the Club, we anticipate running a “Silent Auction”. To this end we are seeking donations of goods, services, memorabilia or items which would be suitable for this cause. No item too big or small. If you can assist, please advise Sandra Ioane or myself with the details.

Tables of eight may be pre-booked at a discounted cost of $950. Start putting a team together and keep September 16 free. Individual seats $125.

Table or individual bookings with Brian Lough or Sandra Ioane at the club.

In line with modern trends we are endeavouring to notify as many people as possible through email. If you receive notification of this event from more than one source, please don’t be alarmed as the Club holds several data bases. We do not mean to harass you but just want the event to be a sell out again.

JNR RUGBY CANCELLED 30 JULY 2016

Please read the message from Auckland Council as below.

All Junior Rugby (U6-U13) is cancelled for tomorrow Saturday 30th July. This is due to the continued atrocious weather over this past week, the Auckland Council has closed most of their grounds.

This needs be adhered too. The ARU work closely together with the Auckland Council and obviously we do not want young players to miss their Saturday games, but the bigger picture is to make sure the grounds are not badly damaged so that future games can go ahead.

Please note:  the only games going ahead are games drawn at College Rifles due to the nature of the surface.

PREMIERS BOOK SPOT IN SEMI-FINALS

This Saturday afternoon the Ponsonby Premiers play Suburbs in one of the two sudden death Gallaher Shield semi-finals, the match being played at Shadbolt Park in Green Bay.

Ponsonby have not won the prestigious trophy since 2011, but have been involved in the quarter or semi-finals in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Since their inception in 1918 Suburbs have only won the Gallaher Shield on two occasions, the first being in 1977 and then the second in 1992.

Ponsonby last featured in the Gallaher Shield semi-finals in 2014, going down to University at Colin Maiden Park by 44-11.

They featured in the coveted trophy quarter-finals back in 2013, playing Suburbs at Shadbolt Park. On that afternoon Ponsonby were edged by Suburbs by 25-22. Of the 22 man squad that travelled to Shadbolt Park for the fixture, only Leo Ngahe remains in the 2016 line up.

In 2012 Ponsonby exited the semi-finals after going down to Marist by 20-3.

The blue and blacks narrowly missed out on a home ground advantage in this week’s semi-final when they went down to College Rifles last Saturday by 22-21 after leading by 18-0 at halftime. In the same round Suburbs were too strong for Pakuranga, scoring five tries in their 34-5 victory, including 22 unanswered second half points.

Suburbs and Ponsonby played a competition match just two weeks ago, Ponsonby turning around a 15-11 halftime deficit and playing into the breeze in the second spell, to win by 32-18.

Suburbs and Ponsonby have produced very similar results this season, and in the 14 competition matches both sides have registered 10 wins. In these 14 games Suburbs have scored 393 points, and conceded 260, whilst Ponsonby has scored 386, and had 256 scored against them.

The victor on Saturday afternoon will advance to next week’s Gallaher Shield final, where they would face either College Rifles or Grammar-Tec. There is no prize on Saturday afternoon for the second place-getter and a loss will bring the curtain down on the 2016 season for the one of the teams.

Blue squad member and NZ Under 20 representative Jordan Trainor has been named to start at fullback, in what will be his second start in the blue and black hoops. Trainor featured against College Rifles in the opening match of the club season in April, but his onfield time was cut short after he sustained a nasty injury, side-lining him for six weeks. Outstanding flanker Blake Gibson will start the match from the bench, his first appearance this year.

The match kicks off at 2.45pm at Shadbolt Park.

The Premier Reserves play College Rifles in the semi-final of the George Nicholson Cup, the match kicking off at Western Springs Stadium at 12.30pm.

PREMIER RESERVES DEFEAT COLLEGE RIFLES, WIN FINAL ROUND

The Ponsonby Premier Reserve side has continued its impressive unbeaten run this season, defeating College Rifles last Saturday afternoon. The win saw them finish top of the competition table and earn the Tramways Cup.

Ponsonby edged their hosts by 32-29, scoring five tries, with Tyrone Ngaluafe bagging a hat-trick.

The first try of the match was scored by Roger Tuamoheloa in what was a simple move off the back of the scrum. From an attacking scrum five metres away from the College Rifles line, Pale Pasina detached, offloading to Tuamoheloa who crossed the line without a hand being laid on him. Robert Sanele added the extra two points, and Ponsonby had an early 7-0 advantage.

From the restart Ponsonby went onto the attack, Josh Hawkins initially being denied a try in the corner. A five metre scrum resulted, and Ngaluafe was on hand to barge over.

College Rifles responded a short time later, the left winger crossing.

Later in the half Ngaluafe scored his second of the match, the score advancing to 17-5, Ponsonby taking this lead to the halftime break.

The home side were first to score in the new half, adopting a classic forward drive to the line.

Three minutes later Ngaluafe grabbed the ball from a ruck that was metres away from the Rifles line, and charged over, recording his third of the game. The conversion drifted away, and Ponsonby had a 22-10 lead.

Charlie Hubert entered the game from the bench, and made an impact almost immediately. A breakout from inside the Ponsonby half, saw Hubert carve through the defence, and he had the pace to avoid the intending tacklers. Willie Gibbons converted, and Ponsonby now led by 29-10.

In the final ten minutes of the match Rifles scored three tries, two of which were converted, and a Willie Gibbons penalty goal ensure the Ponsonby victory.

The Premier Reserves will now head back to Western Springs Stadium next Saturday, this time hosting College Rifles in the semi-final of the George Nicholson Cup, the match kicking off at 12.30pm.

PREMIERS FALL TO RIFLES, ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS

In the final round of Auckland Premier club rugby on Saturday the Ponsonby Premiers came agonisingly close to upsetting the competition leaders, College Rifles.

After leading by 18-0 at halftime, Ponsonby held a slender 21-19 advantage in the final quarter, but a penalty goal by College Rifles 13 minutes from time saw the blue and blacks trail by 22-21, and despite their best efforts they were unable to seize a late victory.

Despite losing to College Rifles, Ponsonby have secured a spot in next Saturday’s Gallaher Shield semi-finals against Suburbs, but will travel away to Shadbolt Park for the fixture.

Ponsonby had first use of a brisk southerly breeze, and used it wisely, dominating most facets of play in the half.

After missing an early long range penalty goal attempt, William Talataina-Mu succeeded with his second attempt from closer range.

Ponsonby scored the first try of the match, awarded to Freedom Vaha’akolo, after some excellent work by Pryor Collier and Danny Tusitala. With a handy 8-0 lead, Ponsonby had a firm grasp on the match, and were forcing their hosts into fundamental errors.

Midway through the first spell Ponsonby were awarded their third penalty of the match, a kick being drilled to the corner. Following a successful lineout win, a promising Ponsonby move was repelled by Rifles, and they attempted a clearing kick. The ball fell into the arms of Joe Beckett on the right wing, and he then raced down the touchline eluding two intending tacklers scoring in the right hand corner. The wonderful solo effort by Beckett was converted by Talataina-Mu, stretching the Ponsonby lead to 15-0.

A further penalty goal from Ponsonby extended their lead to 18-0, and given their dominance appeared to be unassailable.

Play had not gone the way of Rifles in the first spell, and it wasn’t until just short of the halftime whistle that they were awarded their first penalty of the match. Just ten metres out from the Ponsonby line the left winger Joseva Ravouvou looked to take a quick tap and apply pressure to the retreating defence. Alas the ball was knocked on during the quick tap, and that summed up the half for the home side.

Turning into the wind and with a solid 18-0 lead, Ponsonby did not start well, and were called upon to defend their line in the opening minutes. Unfortunately they were taking wrong options, and errors came into their game.

Five minutes into the half the College Rifles first five eighth Rocky Khan made a clean break, paving the way for Loketi Manu to race to the line. The try was converted by Otu Mausia.

Minutes later Joseva Ravouvou skipped down the right wing for a try in the left hand corner. The try remained unconverted, and Rifles now trailed by 18-12.

Talataina-Mu goaled another penalty for Ponsonby, his third of the match, extending the Ponsonby advantage to 21-12.

The restart by Rifles was not claimed by Ponsonby, players letting the ball bounce. The opposing lock Josh Brajkovic gratefully claimed the ball and went close to scoring. An attacking five metre scrum resulted and from this Hayden Edwards crashed over, scoring a very soft try. The Mausia conversion brought Rifles to 21-19 down.

The late penalty by Otu Mausia snatched the lead away from Ponsonby, and despite several attempts, they were unable to penetrate the solid College Rifles defence.

SILVERWARE AND MORE AT STAKE FOR PONSONBY PREMIERS

This Saturday afternoon sees the final round of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Trophy competition, and Ponsonby are drawn to face the table topping College Rifles. The draw is perfectly scripted, seeing the first and second placed sides squaring off, with plenty up for grabs.

Ponsonby should start this match with a degree of confidence after their second half domination of Suburbs last week. Should Ponsonby win this encounter against Rifles and earn four competition points they will win the Comradery Cup, plus regain the Sir Fred Allen Challenge Cup. However if Ponsonby win, and achieve a valuable four try bonus point they will also win the Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield, plus gain a guaranteed home advantage semi-final in the Gallaher Shield play-offs. Nevertheless the latter also requires Ponsonby to deny College Rifles any bonus points from the match, and that in itself will be a challenge given how Rifles has performed this season, and what they stand to gain should they win the match.

A victory for Rifles this Saturday afternoon will see them win or retain all the above mentioned silverware, plus they will be guaranteed a home ground advantage in the Gallaher Shield semi-final on the 23rd of July.

In its inaugural season, the Comaradery Cup is contested between Ponsonby and College Rifles, the cup being donated by club stalwart Sam Lawrence. The cup was won by Rifles following their victory back in April.

In 2016 College Rifles have been extremely impressive registering 12 wins from 13 encounters, amassing 462 points, and conceding 201. The only loss was to Suburbs in the 3rd round of the Alan McEvoy, by 33-27. Rifles are this season’s most improved side, and have risen to glory after failing to qualify for the top eight in 2015. It was a resounding 49-26 win by Ponsonby that crushed the chances of College Rifles advancing to 2015 Alan McEvoy round. Rifles then played the second half of the season in the Portola Trophy group, losing in the Trophy semi-final to Suburbs by 30-25.

Ponsonby and College Rifles played in the opening match of the 2016 competition at Western Springs back in April. The blue and blacks led by 13-10 at halftime, and then allowed the visitors to seize control of the game, going on to take the match by 26-13.

The run on side for this final round robin match features a few changes from last week’s side. Campbell Woodmass, Pryor Collier and Joe Beckett all return after being unavailable last week, and Danny Tusitala moves from halfback to the left wing. After a lengthy injury enforced break Waha Waitohi will start from the bench.

The Premiers play College Rifles on the artificial surface at their Remuera headquarters, kicking off at 2.45pm. The unbeaten Ponsonby Premier Reserves feature against the College Rifles opposites on the number two ground at Haast St, kicking off at 1.00pm.

PONSONBY:

1 Junior Halafuka; 2 Willie Uili; 3 Marco Fepuleai; 4 Leo Ngahe; 5 Jamie Lane; 6 Sam Slade;        7 Willis Hopwood; 8 Presley Tufuga; 9 Campbell Woodmass; 10 William Talataina-Mu; 11 Danny Tusitala;   12 Pat Tausie; 13 Pryor Collier; 14 Joseph Beckett; 15 Freedom Vaha’akolo;

16 Romero Tagi; 17 Steven Savali; 18 Anthony Diack; 19 Waha Waitohi; 20 Laki Tiatia; 21 Junior Cagiaceva; 22 Morrison Siliko

PREMIERS DOWN SUBURBS IN THRILLER

Some scintillating second half rugby from the Ponsonby Premiers against Suburbs on Saturday produced a much needed 32-18 win, assuring the blue and blacks a spot in the Gallaher Shield playoffs.

Ponsonby trailed the visitors by 18-16 going into the final quarter of the match, and two tries and two penalties in the space of 17 minutes not only sealed the victory for the blue and blacks, but saw them earn a valuable bonus point, helping in their quest for a semi-final at Western Springs.

In the Suburbs encounter, the pre-match preparations did not go as they should have, with sensational wing Joe Beckett sustaining an injury in the warm-ups, ruling him out of the starting XV.

However Ponsonby enjoyed an ideal start in the match. The initial kick off by Ponsonby was knocked on by a Suburbs player, and then played by another in an offside position. Referee Kyle Harris had no alternative but to award a penalty, which William Talataina-Mu goaled and Ponsonby had a 3-0 lead in the first minute.

The Ponsonby advantage on the scoreboard was short-lived as the dangerous running Suburbs backs were able to carve through the midfield, eluding intending tacklers. The move was finished off in the left hand corner by the winger Jona Sawailau. Carl Perry was unable to convert the try, but Suburbs had a 5-3 lead.

Perry did however goal a penalty soon after, extending the Suburbs lead to 8-3.

With momentum going their way Suburbs were throwing everything at Ponsonby, and they were finding gaps in the midfield and were gaining ground with ease. The hard running centre Varasiko Duisokosoko running 60 metres before being brought down by some outstanding defence by Freedom Vaha’akolo.

At the halfway point in the first spell Ponsonby had taken control of the game and spent a sustained period on attack. After some solid work by Presley Tufuga, and then several phases of play they set up camp just ten metres from the Suburbs line. A perfectly judged crossfield kick by William Talataina-Mu fell into the arms of Morrison Siliko who scored out wide. The conversion fell short but the scores were now level at 8-8.

Just moments later Suburbs infringed and Talataina-Mu attempted a long range penalty, the ball drifting away.  Then two minutes on, Suburbs again infringed in almost the same field position, and this time Talataina-Mu did succeed with the penalty goal.

Suburbs yet again used their pacy outside backs to exploit the Ponsonby defence and from a line out deep inside their own half the ball went wide to the right winger, Bruno Tuivai, who combined with the fullback Pisi Leilua on a lengthy move, eventually freeing halfback Rameka Paraki who cantered to the line, scoring under the posts. Perry converted and Suburbs took a 15-11 lead into the half time break.

Ponsonby turned into the wind after the break but in the opening minutes they showed some renewed intensity.

However Suburbs were the first on the board in the second spell, Perry goaling another penalty to extend the lead for his side to 18-11.

Ponsonby regrouped and started to apply pressure to Suburbs and dominate proceedings. A penalty in their favour was drilled to the touch by Talataina-Mu, the ensuing lineout forming just outside the Suburbs 22 metre line. The ball was tapped down, and replacement prop Alex Matapo set off on a big run that saw play go agonisingly close to the line. Some great work by Presley Tufuga paved the way for the inspirational captain Willie Uili to barge over. The conversion was charged down, and Ponsonby now trailed by 18-16.

The blue and blacks continued to dominate play, and successfully denied Suburbs any possession.

With 17 minutes of the match remaining a Talataina-Mu penalty goal gave the lead to Ponsonby at 19-18.

Then two minutes later it was a piece of Talataina-Mu brilliance that saw Ponsonby go further ahead. The classy first five-eight initiated a move out of his side’s half, carving a magnificent gap up field wrong-footing the intending tacklers, then a sweet offload to Danny Tusitala out on the right wing, who then sped to the line for a splendid five pointer. The conversion fell short, but Ponsonby now had a 24-18 lead.

Inside the final ten minutes Talataina-Mu goaled his fourth penalty of the match, giving Ponsonby a 27-18 advantage.

Aware that Suburbs had to score twice to take the game added extra confidence to the Ponsonby performance. They continued to dominate play and territory, forcing Suburbs into costly errors.

With five minutes to play Pat Tausie displayed some exceptional pace as he raced to the tryline, scoring Ponsonby’s fourth and bonus point try. The jubilation amongst the Ponsonby side was extraordinary and confirmed the tremendous character that exists in this side.

The win over Suburbs propels Ponsonby into second place on the competition table on 20 points, five points behind College Rifles, who the blue and blacks tackle next Saturday afternoon on the ‘carpet’ in Remuera. Rifles will be confident after taking the scalp of Marist last Saturday by 34-14, and knowing that they have already beaten Ponsonby this season.

Next Saturday afternoon is the final round of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Trophy competition, and in a top of the table clash this promises to be a very exciting encounter.

PREMIER RESERVES TOO GOOD FOR SUBURBS

The Ponsonby Premier Reserves remain unbeaten this season after their latest victory which was achieved over Suburbs last Saturday.

Played at Western Springs Stadium, the Ponsonby side were too strong for the visiting side, scoring eight tries in the 49-17 rout.

Ponsonby went about their work right from the start, denying the visitors any possession and after a prolonged period of pressure an attack the first try was scored by Pale Pasina, who crossed in the left hand corner.

The Suburbs restart failed to go the necessary ten metres, and from the Ponsonby scrum feed on the halfway mark the side worked hard, forwards combining well with backs, and a 50 metre sweeping move was finished off by Joel Joshi-Smith.

Straight away Ponsonby went back on to the attack, and what followed was an impressive 80 metre in which the ball was handled by almost every man in the side. The move eventually went close to the Suburbs line, and Wilson Lavelua crashed over beneath the posts. The try was converted by Willie Gibbons, and Ponsonby had raced out to a 17-0 lead after just 16 minutes play.

Indications were that Ponsonby would run away with this match, but Suburbs rallied and applied enough pressure to earn a penalty. They opted to kick for goal, however the attempted kick struck the left hand upright, catching the Ponsonby side unawares. The attacking Suburbs players were on hand to claim the rebound, claiming possession and eventually scoring.

Soon after, Epati Pasina scored Ponsonby’s fourth try, crossing in the left hand corner, which saw the score advance to 22-5 in Ponsonby’s favour.

Before the break Suburbs added two further tries, one of which was converted,

Ponsonby had the last say in the half, with Willie Gibbons goaling a penalty taking his side to the break at 25-17.

In the second spell Ponsonby crossed for four further tries. The first was scored by replacement fullback Robert Sanele who showed some real determination to get to the line.

The remaining tries were scored by Cody O’Neill – his first fro Ponsonby, then by hard working flanker Ji Young Lee, and finally by Lolomanaia Saulala.

PONSONBY PRIMED FOR SUBURBS CLASH

The penultimate round of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Trophy competition has Ponsonby back at home hosting Suburbs. This matchup between the second and third placed teams promises to be a tough encounter.

The blue and blacks will be eager to recapture their winning form following losses in their previous two matches. Ponsonby will need to bounce back after their injury time loss to Marist in the last round. Despite outscoring Marist by five tries to four, Ponsonby conceded some late penalties in the match from which their hosts profited. Ponsonby were on the wrong end of some 50-50 calls by the match officials, but they will need to look for accuracy, particularly with their final passes.

Ponsonby last played Suburbs on the 28th of June 2014 at Shadbolt Park in Green Bay, and the blue and blacks turned round a 9-3 halftime deficit to win by 28-17.

In the Alan McEvoy round in 2016 Suburbs has collected 20 competition points from the five outings, recording four wins and a solitary loss. Their loss came in the fourth round, when they were undone on their home ground by Grammar-Tec by 18-14. Suburbs have notched up wins over Marist, Papatoetoe, College Rifles and Waitemata. The latter three were all high scoring encounters, with Suburbs scoring a total of 100 points from the three, and their opponents amassing 89 points. In the Alan McEvoy round Suburbs and Ponsonby have both recorded 19 tries, and have conceded 14 and 13 tries respectively.

Ponsonby will be aware of the goal kicking prowess of Suburbs first five eighth Carl Perry, who has notched up a very respectable 131 points in the 2016 season to date. Additionally Suburbs has some strong ball carriers and dangerous running outside backs, so Ponsonby will be looking for a big defensive effort this week.

The starting XV for this match features a few changes from that which started against Marist last week. In the pack Willis Hopwood and Sam Slade start on the flanks. PREMIERS EDGED BY MARIST IN NAIL-BITER

The Ponsonby Premiers came up short against Marist on Saturday afternoon in their Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield match, going down by 32-31.

Ponsonby led 31-29 in the dying moments, but an injury time penalty goal by Marist denied the blue and blacks a victory that was crucial in their continued quest for Gallaher Shield semi-final glory. To remain in semi-final contention, the pressure now goes on Ponsonby to win both the remaining round-robin matches.

Ponsonby outscored Marist by five tries to four, but it was the boot of Marist’s Jack Saena that was to be the difference, succeeding with five from six attempts at goal.

It was Ponsonby that were first on the scoreboard in what was bizarre circumstances. In the opening seconds of the match William Talataina-Mu attempted a neat little chip kick which was intended to bounce in behind the advancing Marist defenders. The ball rebounded off one of the Marist forwards into the arms of Presley Tufuga, and with great athleticism he raced down the right hand touch. He then cut back in field, offloading to the supporting Pryor Collier who scored beneath the posts. Talataina-Mu added the extra two, and Ponsonby had a 7-0 lead in the first minute.

The second try of the match was a gem. Ponsonby had a scrum feed just inside the Marist 22 metre mark, the forwards then displaying some classic ‘pick and go’ moves. Patience paid off, and once Talataina-Mu was in possession it was a foregone conclusion that the blue and blacks would score, and a deft pop pass to Pat Tausie saw the second five-eighth cross. The conversion took Ponsonby out to a handy 14-0 lead after 16 minutes.

Alas, Marist struck straight back. The ball lay unprotected in a Ponsonby ruck, which the winger Vaha Fili sauntered through, and after a clean pick up he sped 40 metres to the line, leaving several Ponsonby defenders in his wake. Jack Saena goaled the conversion.

Then it was Ponsonby’s turn to strike straight away. The restart fell cleanly for Marist, but their clearing kick failed to find touch. Instead it fell into the arms of Presley Tufuga, who directed a big pass infield to Freedom Vaha’akolo, and with support from Morrison Siliko play went into the Marist 22. Pat Tausie was on hand to gather the final pass and cross for his second try.

With a 19-7 advantage, Ponsonby were showing signs that they were well in control. Marist however had other ideas. After a prolonged period on attack Marist scored again, with Vaha Fili crossing for his second, which was converted by Jack Saena.

Three minutes later Marist again broke the Ponsonby defensive line, and in a case of deja-vu, Fili scored and Saena converted. Marist now had the lead at 21-19.

A Talataina-Mu penalty goal attempt just before the break would have been advantageous for Ponsonby, but the kick drifted away, and Marist took their lead of 21-19 to the halftime break.

The halftime message to the Ponsonby side was effective, and the blue and blacks turned into the breeze and facing the sun with renewed vigour.

In just the 2nd minute of the spell, some great work by Freedom Vaha’akolo and Leo Ngahe, plus an outstanding run by Alex Matapo, allowed Anthony Diack to charge over under the posts. Talataina-Mu converted, and Ponsonby were again in front at 26-21.

In the 50th minute of the match an outstanding break by Pryor Collier took play deep into Marist’s territory, and with the defence stretched a Ponsonby try was inevitable. Talataina-Mu drilled a clever kick across field, the ball bouncing kindly for Freedom Vaha’akolo to gather and touch down in the corner. The conversion sailed away, and Ponsonby had what appeared to be a commanding 31-21 lead.

However within minutes Marist added a penalty goal from the boot of Saena, and a try to David Afamasaga, bringing them to within striking distance of Ponsonby at 31-29.

In the last 19 minutes of the match Marist rallied to overtake Ponsonby, and all the 50/50 calls were going their way. Accordingly Marist had their tails up. On a couple of occasions Ponsonby looked good to score, but were called back when final passes were deemed forward or when lineout throws were ruled not straight.

With a couple of minutes remaining Ponsonby appeared to have the game sown up.

With a minute remaining in the game a tremendous burst toward the Marist line by Leo Ngahe, who then offloaded to Danny Tusitala, only to see him bustled him out at the corner flag. Marist were then awarded a lineout five metres from their own line. What followed was heartbreak for Ponsonby.

A free kick and a series of penalties awarded in favour of the homeside saw play shift from one end of the fieldto the other, and when Marist were inside the Ponsonby 22 the inevitable penalty came, which Jack Saena was never going to miss.

After gathering two valuable bonus points, Ponsonby retain their third spot on the competition table on 15 points, five behind the 1st and 2nd placed sides, and one point ahead of Grammar-Tec, who are in 4th place. Ponsonby will now look ahead to the sixth and penultimate match in the round when they host Suburbs, who sit in second place on the table on 20 points. Suburbs scored five converted tries in last Saturday’s battle with Waitemata, finishing with a 35-32 win.

PONSONBY:

Tries: Pat Tausie 2, Pryor Collier, Anthony Diack and Freedom Vaha’akolo

Conversions: Williams Talataina-Mu 3

PONSONBY PREMIER RESERVES OUTMUSCLE UNIVERSITY

Last Saturday afternoon the Premier Reserves maintained this season’s unbeaten run with a resounding 41-5 win over the University Reserves.

Played at Colin Maiden Park, the Ponsonby side were dominant in all facets of play, crossing for seven tries, whilst conceding only one.

Ponsonby dominated the opening minutes of play, and were unlucky not to score early on. Eventually they found some space and a clever pass from Pale Pasina saw winger Doug Halley race to the corner for the opening try.

After a lengthy injury break, Tyrone Ngaluafe has made a welcome return to the backline of the Premier Reserves side. He was making his presence known in the opening stages of this game, and he showed some tremendous strength and determination on a 25 metre surge to the line, carrying several defenders with him before he crashed over.

A set move from a Ponsonby scrum feed that was executed with precision saw Doug Halley score his second try of the match in the 26th minute, which Willie Gibbons converted, advancing the Ponsonby lead to 17-0.

Turning after the halftime break Ponsonby immediately went onto the attack, resulting in Andy Varoy charging over. Gibbons again converted, taking the score to 24-0.

Just four minutes later Ponsonby went into attack mode. A promising move down the right wing by fullback Jordan Ngamata-Poi, complete with a superb dummy, before offloading to Aleni Ropati who scored in the right hand corner.

In the final quarter of the match Ponsonby led by 29-0, and substitutions from the reserves bench added extra impetus.

Two of the replacements combined to record Ponsonby’s sixth try of the afternoon. From a scrum five metres out from the University line, halfback Roger Tuamoheloa ran wide linking with Epati Pasina on the right wing who crashed over in the corner.

Into the final ten minutes of the match, and University found a gap in the usually Ponsonby impenetrable defence, scoring out wide.

Just before the final whistle sounded, some decisive running by Tyrone Ngaluafe resulted in Epati Pasina recording a double. Jordan Ngamata-Poi added the extra two points, rounding off a satisfying victory.

The Premier Reserves are back at Western Springs next week hosting the Suburbs opposites.
